Camille Gibbs Memorial Scholarship

Camille Gibbs spent her life helping others, worked full-time, and was a mid-life student on the verge of accomplishing her life-long dream of a college degree.  Prior to her heartbreaking murder in 1991, Ms. Gibbs was an IDS/PACE major who began her studies here in 1989; she is one of the few persons who have been awarded a posthumous degree from CSUDH.  She was an exceptional person.  Her husband, Leroy, said she had lived a full life but wanted to do much more, and she felt special pride as an African American woman pursuing her bachelor’s degree. The week of her murder, the following quote from Leroy Gibbs appeared in The Daily News: “Many blacks face disadvantages during the early education years, and she considered this an accomplishment.  Every A that she got, she deserved,” he said.  “Her life was finally coming to fruition – all her dreams were coming true.  This is not the way it should have ended.”  In her honor, her family and co-workers joined with her fellow students and her professors to establish a scholarship in her name that would help future IDS/PACE students returning as adults to college.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must be enrolled in Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS)/PACE undergraduate majors
  • Be returning students or have a non-traditional pathway to graduation
  • Submit an essay (400-500 words) that reflects on each of the following:
    1. What are your thoughts on the purpose of the award and Camille Gibbs’ legacy?
    2. What kind of challenges, if any, did you face and how did you deal with them?
    3. Why did you return to college?
    4. What are your career and/or personal goals?
    5. How will you honor Camille’s legacy?
    6. What difference do you think this award would make for you?

CSU System - Jim Sanders Media and Leadership Scholarship

James Sanders wasn’t known by that name. He wasn’t often called Jim. People working at the television stations in Sacramento, CA; Columbus, OH; San Diego, CA; and San Francisco, CA where he presided as news director knew him as Sanders. He was a leader, not just a manager. As one former employee said about Sanders after his death in September 2015, “Sanders was all about integrity. From the choice and quality of the stories he put on the air to his mentoring of countless people in all areas of news, he operated from a base of encouragement, never negativity. From a heart full of courage instead of fear. Sanders didn’t force you to do your best, he made you want to do your best. And he led by example, holding himself up to the highest standard and trusting that his people would rise to their highest potential. I am not unique in my love and admiration for this funny, charismatic, intelligent man; there are many of us who would have followed Jim Sanders anywhere.” This scholarship is to honor and support the leaders of today and tomorrow among the California State University student population.
