Camille Gibbs spent her life helping others, worked full-time, and was a mid-life student on the verge of accomplishing her life-long dream of a college degree.  Prior to her heartbreaking murder in 1991, Ms. Gibbs was an IDS/PACE major who began her studies here in 1989; she is one of the few persons who have been awarded a posthumous degree from CSUDH.  She was an exceptional person.  Her husband, Leroy, said she had lived a full life but wanted to do much more, and she felt special pride as an African American woman pursuing her bachelor’s degree. The week of her murder, the following quote from Leroy Gibbs appeared in The Daily News: “Many blacks face disadvantages during the early education years, and she considered this an accomplishment.  Every A that she got, she deserved,” he said.  “Her life was finally coming to fruition – all her dreams were coming true.  This is not the way it should have ended.”  In her honor, her family and co-workers joined with her fellow students and her professors to establish a scholarship in her name that would help future IDS/PACE students returning as adults to college.

The Nathaniel R. and Valerie Dumont Scholarship was established through a bequest in 1993 to assist students with financial needs, especially those with visual or physical impairments.
Amount: Eight (8) $5,000.00 scholarships will be awarded for the 2025-2026 academic year.

The California Society of Municipal Finance Officers (CSMFO) established the Robert M. Odell endowed scholarship fund in April 1987 to honor the former city treasurer of Los Angeles.  The scholarships are awarded on an alternating basis between northern and southern geographic regions of California to the seventeen campuses offering degree programs in public administration.
Amount: Four (4) scholarships for the amount of $2,500 each will be awarded for the 2025-2026 academic year.

• Be in a degree program in public administration
• Be in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• Be currently enrolled as a full-time, upper division undergraduate or graduate student in public administration and must remain a full-time student in good standing during the academic year in which the award is received.

The Marcie Stewart Memorial Scholarship is awarded to currently enrolled undergraduate students majoring one of the STEM disciplines. This scholarship was created in memory of Marcie Stewart, a CSUDH alumna who majored in mathematics and taught for the department. Students are selected based on academic performance and promise.

• Write an essay that addresses your reasons for applying to CSUDH and the Presidential Scholarship Program. Include information about how CSUDH will help you achieve your educational and career goals, and how you plan to contribute to the CSUDH community of talented and diverse students and scholars and your local community. The essay should not exceed 600 words.
• Prepare and submit a document that lists your awards and honors, school/college-related activities, community service, work experience, leadership, and other notable achievements.
• You will need the email address of at least one faculty member, counselor, employer, or mentor to request at least one letter of recommendation. Please request the letter from someone that knows you well and can attest to your academic, leadership, and community endeavors.
• After initial screening of applications, selected students will be invited to attend an interview in March and April with the Presidential Scholars Selection Committee.

  • The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership for Justice
• Candidate plans to work with children in Early Childhood Education (preschool through 3rd Grade setting) in the Los Angeles area AND/OR plan to work with and/or support Black children, youth, or educators.  

• CSUDH Scholarships will be awarded the following academic year 2026-2027, starting in the fall semester. The total award amount is for one entire academic year. The award is divided in half, and the first half will be disbursed at the start of fall semester and the second half at the start of the spring semester.

• Receipt of the scholarship is based on maintaining enrollment of 12 units for full time and 6-9 units for part time status. Scholarships will be prorated for part time enrollment.
